One of my all time favourite and dear friend, Fatina Asfour is a regionally and internationally acclaimed head of Kumbaz. Established in 1986, Kumbaz is a modern garment design house that combines traditional heritage with modern accents, aiming to recapture Jordanian culture and revive it through research and dedicated hard work.
Kumbaz began as a small atelier of designers who wanted to preserve Jordanian heritage and modernize it. Kumbaz is a perfectionist atelier, and Asfour keeps her attention attuned to details. She uses rich silks and hand-woven materials, as well as antique gold threads on its hand-embroidered items.
In Amman Design Week‘s Hangar Exhibition, Kumbaz‘s pieces were breathtaking in their brilliant elegance. Kumbaz‘s collection was distinct in its embroidery work, which reflected Jordan’s tradition and its rich history in the craft.
I had the pleasure to model for Kumbaz, wearing the garment that were exhibited in ADW. It was so much fun to take part in a photo shoot for this fashion house at Mamdouh Bisharat’s Diwan in downtown Amman. Taken back to an era in the past in Bisharat’s historical Diwan, Asfour’s designs recaptured heritage and added to it a contemporary feel, and the simplicity of the gowns complemented the darker corners of the Diwan.
Working with Fatina Asfour, was as beautiful and inspiring an experience as it has always been.
